Police Use of Drones for Public Safety and Crime Prevention

If you imagine a police use for a drone you likely don't immediately picture a surveillance application. However, a police helicopter has many advantages. It's faster than helicopters and can search for crime scenes and capture photos of natural hazards. Police drones can also be used to locate fugitives, and chase down suspects. It's a valuable tool to improve public safety and prevent crime.

Grabbit G6

A new technology is coming to the police department: a drone. Grabbit G6 is a police drone that uses facial recognition technology. HigherGround invented this technology and it is called Live911. The technology allows police teleoperators to monitor 911 calls in realtime. This information gives tactical intelligence to the police teleoperator and helps him launch the drone based the emergency reported. Police departments can send the drones to a scene before officers even realize what is happening.

Skyseer

A fully loaded SkySeer costs around US$25,000 to $30000. This price includes all electronics, the video surveillance system and a groundstation with computer interfaces. The video interface allows for real-time transmission of video to the police's computer. Once the case is concluded, the video can also be recorded to DVD/Macromedia Flash. A preset flight path is also available for the drone.

AeroVironment

Grand Forks, N.D. Sheriff's Department, one of the few agencies using AeroVironment helicopters for police. The drone, which is similar in appearance to a model aircraft with four motors and a digital camera, was developed by AeroVironment. Rather than watching a suspect, the drone can follow him or her around and capture images for authorities to use in an arrest or investigation. The Qube is the name of this drone. It is not a toy.

Predator

U.S. Customs and Boarder Protection controls a Predator drone. It is a highly-sophisticated aerial surveillance tool. Using thermal imaging and cameras, these aircraft fly at high altitudes to capture footage of criminals. A recent case of civil unrest in Minnesota saw a Predator B flying over the city. Nelson County police blamed the Brossart Family's surveillance for the arrest. While privacy concerns remain, the use of drones for law enforcement has many advantages.

Reaper

The MQ-9 Reaper, a remote piloted aircraft, is used by the United States Department of Defense (USAF), the U.S. Air Force (USAF), and the UK Ministry of Defence. The Reaper has the ability to hunt targets and observe terrain. The Reaper can gather intelligence data from multiple sensors and payloads (such as a thermographic camera) and receive operator commands in less that one second.

FAQ

Where Are Drones Banned?

The FAA has banned drones in areas near airports and stadiums. However, they allow them to fly nightly using GPS technology.

Do I require special training to fly a drone

No, you don’t need any special training in order to fly your drone. You just need a remote-control unit and basic knowledge in flight mechanics.

Are drones permissible at public events

The rules are not required for drone flying. If you want to fly your drone in public events like parades, festivals, concerts, etc., you must get permission from the event organizers.

Is it illegal to fly a drone?

Yes, flying drones is illegal in some countries such as Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States. However, it is legal in other countries like France, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, and Vietnam.

How To

How to Fly Drones with Beginners

A drone refers to a remote-controlled aircraft designed for aerial photography, surveillance and scientific research. Drones are a technology that has been around since World War II. DJI introduced their Phantom series of quadcopters in 2010, but commercial use only began in 2010. Since then, there have been many different types of drones available, from beginner-friendly models like the Parrot AR Drone 2.0 to professional-grade multi-rotor craft like the DJI Mavic Pro.

There are several ways to fly a drone, including;

  1. Remote control – This is when you attach a device to your hand that allows you to control the drone's flight path. There are two main types of controllers: On/Off switches (like a radio) and joysticks.
  2. Manual Control – This allows remote operation of the drone via GPS coordinates using a smartphone application. Follow the instructions of the app to track the exact location you want the drone go.
  3. Autonomous flight - The drone takes over the piloting duties. It is basically flying autonomously and without human intervention. A drone must have a builtin camera and sensors capable to capture images and other data.
  4. Triggered Flight - This method is similar to manual control, except the pilot manually sets up a preprogrammed route, and the drone follows that route until it reaches the endpoint. After the preprogrammed route is complete, the drone will automatically land and return to its base.
  5. Landing Gear - Some drones come equipped with landing gear that allows them to land safely if they lose power or run out of battery during flight.
  6. Goggles - Pilots may wear goggles to shield themselves from flying debris.
  7. Camera - You can capture photos and videos with your drone from the air.
  8. Obstacles. Some drones can have obstacle avoidance technology that stops them from hitting obstacles.
  9. Speed - Drones can reach speeds up to 40 mph.
  10. Battery Life – Most drones will last 20 minutes to three hours depending on how powerful they are.
  11. Range - Depending on the model, some drones can travel up to 30 miles away.
  12. Power source - Some drones require an external power source; others work off internal batteries.
  13. Weight - Some drones have a weight of less than 1 pound and others weigh 4 lbs.
  14. Size - From small drones that can be carried in the palm of one's hand to larger drones that weigh over 50 pounds, drones come in a variety of sizes.
  15. Price - All drones fall within a specific price range, from high-end models that can cost thousands of dollars to lower-cost options starting at $100.
